THE BECOMING - Jeanne C. Stein
Paranormal Suspense
San Diego, Present Day
Bounty hunter Anna Strong is on a stakeout with her partner David when something goes horribly wrong. Their target is supposed to be a weasel of a man wanted for embezzlement. But Donaldson has changed, become faster and stronger. Before she knows it, Anna awakens in the hospital with little memory of the fight. When Dr. Avery tells her that she was assaulted, it seems to Anna as if it happened to someone else. She has little memory of it beyond biting Donaldson and, strangely, for the beating she must have taken, Anna is feeling quite strong.
Released from the hospital, Anna soon learns that she's changed and that Dr. Avery is more than he seems to be. Arriving unexpectedly at her house, he tells her something surprising...Anna is now a vampire and, by the way, so is he. Ready to laugh at his outrageousness, Anna is floored when he puts her in front of a mirror and she sees that he casts no reflection, and hers is becoming hazy. Before Anna can come to grips with her new state, she is attacked by the Revengers, ostensibly a group dedicated to the destruction of all vampires; her house is burned down, and her friend David is kidnapped. Not sure where to start looking, Anna turns to the one person with whom she feels safe -- Avery. But even Avery has secrets. The question is whom can Anna trust?
THE BECOMING is a cross between MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series starring Betsy Taylor and Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. Anna often has a very witty turn of phrase, though she is not quite as hilariously funny as Betsy, and the theme of the tale is much darker than in the Undead series. She's a kick-butt bounty hunter, similar to Anita, but vampires are a complete surprise to her. Most newbies get a chance to learn some things from a mentor. Unfortunately, Anna's not one of them, and she has to literally learn on the run. Avery is a complex character. He plays the gung-ho doctor, romantic leading man, and aloof vampire with equal ease. Anna has fun discovering some of her newborn skills with Avery but doesn't feel as if she truly knows him.
Full of interesting twists and turns that will leave readers guessing, THE BECOMING is a great addition to the TBR pile.

Anna’s new friend Doctor Grant Avery wants to be her mentor and much more. Avery wants Anna to forget about her mortal life and her search for David. He wants Anna to settle into her new life as a vampire. Will Anna be able to adjust to her new life and forget about David? Or will she keep some of her humanity and keep looking for her friend?
Jeanne C. Stein has given us a wonderful new vampire book. The heroine is a kick butt no nonsense kind of woman, whom we love to cheer for when she can take care of herself! This book is jam packed with action and intrigue that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is enough heat in this story you will swear you are near an erupting volcano!
I am looking forward to reading more of Jeanne C. Stein’s books, where there is plenty of action in and out of the bedroom!

Anna Strong's parents are not pleased at their daughter's choice of career as a lady bounty hunter. They will be doubly unhappy when they learn her latest subject has brutally attacked her, raped her and left her large ex-pro football partner injured.
When Anna awakens in the hospital she does not understand why she is not shattered by the attack and why she is recovering so quickly. When the ER doctor visits her at home after her release, he lays to rest some of her many questions when he tells her that she is in the process of "Becoming"... becoming a vampire just like the ER doctor.
The story that follows is Anna's indoctrination into the vampire world as she attempts to learn about this new life she is forced to live while hunting down the man that did this to her.
Anna's new teacher tries to show her the ropes and convince her that some parts of her human life are better left behind. Anna refuses in some cases mainly she will not give up her compassion for others and the sacredness of friendship.
When her partner disappears Anna is told that is a warning but she refuses to turn her back on her dear friend.
Vampire books are becoming quite popular. It was quite refreshing to pick up one that used a female lead character, unfairly turned into a vampire and clinging to her female emotions. At last a fresh twist.

THE BECOMING by Jeanne C. Stein
St. Louis has Anita Blake. LA (the state, not the city) has Sookie Stackhouse. Chicago has Harry Dresden and Cincinnati has Rachel Morgan. And now San Diego has Anna Strong, our own supernatural sleuth. Anna and her partner David are out on a routine assignment, retrieving a white-collar criminal who skipped bail. Things go *very* wrong with the assignment, and Anna wakes up in the hospital after being assaulted and defending herself, to find herself feeling very strange. Fortuitously, her doctor seems to have all the answers: her condition is the result of being turned vampire. Anna strives to cope with her new state and abilities, a difficult task complicated by a new romantic attachment, and an attack on those near and dear to her. Page-turning action with a lot of local color, written by a former San Diego resident.

This was my second time reading this book and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time I read it! Anna Strong worked as a bounty hunter until one night things went awry and she wakes up in the hospital as a vampire. The doctor at the hospital, Dr. Avery, is also a vampire and he becomes Anna's mentor of sorts. Anna then faces one catastrophe after another, starting with being kidnapped, her home being destroyed by arson and then ending with the kidnapping of her business partner and friend, David. Anna realizes that someone is out to get her and she follows each trail, from Donaldson (the vampire who turned her), to the Revengers, to the vampire police chief, until she finds out who is behind all of it. This book has non-stop action as Anna learns what it means to be a vampire while trying to keep herself and her mortal friends alive. Highly recommended!

This was a great book. A refreshing different take on the Vampire legend. Ms. Stein has created a page-turning masterpiece. My only complaint is that I read it too fast. It was one of those books I couldn't wait to get back to, and then was sorry it was over. Fortunately, there is a sequel on the way. I'll be buying that one as soon as it is out.

It's been a long time since I have enjoyed such a book. Ms. Stein's writing is interesting, refreshing and completely absorbing. I started the book one morning and could not put it down until I finished it. Her ingenious twist on the main character, a vampire who refuses to give up on her compassion for humanity, her excellent mystery style and action-packed writing left me disappointed only in that I cannot wait for her next book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be swept away by a new genre of pleasure reading.

When one of her skips attacks her, bounty hunter Anna Strong does not realize at first how bad the attack truly is, even though she was hurt enough to go to a hospital and tests show she was raped. Not until her doctor speaks into her mind does she learn that she was changed into a vampire. That is the least startling thing she will face in days to come. The vampire community is vaster than is comprehensible to her and life as she knows it is finished. Her family and friends become targets- but of whom? Is it the Revengers? The vampire who made her? Or someone unthinkable? Moreover, who is "Casper", the strange voice in her head that guides and comforts her?
**** In an almost Hitchcockian way, this story keeps you guessing, with new twists coming almost every page. Anne is well named, strong in ways she does not even know. Though there really is not much ground to term it a romance, there is such a strong element of surprise to it and mystery that even if you don't like vampire novels- you ought to give this one a shot. ****
"The start of an exciting vampire series!"
For Sensual Romance by A. Black
While pursuing a bail skipper with her partner, bounty hunter Anna Strong is savagely attacked by a vampire. She wakes up in the hospital under the care of Dr. Grant Avery--who speaks to her telepathically. What Anna discovers about her new self, the doctor, and several high-profile city officials, introduces her to a world she previously thought only existed in horror novels.
Besides being handsome and sexy, Grant is an old soul, and he believes Anna is the perfect new soul to spend eternity with. Grant becomes her mentor and teaches her about vampire life, but Anna is not ready to completely accept who she is. She does not want to abandon her human family and friends for the undead community. But when Anna's house is torched and destroyed, and her loved ones are threatened, she realizes that someone--or some thing--wants her dead. Anna must put aside her humanness and begin to think like one of the undead in order to find her enemy.
This is the first book in the Anna Strong series. The California-based world of vampires who can come out during daylight is very believable. The characters are well developed, the story is well written, and the plot has satisfying twists and turns. Anna Strong is a emotionally torn, kick-ass heroine readers will root for again and again. Ms. Stein is a talented writer, and this book is highly recommended for paranormal fans. This is not a traditional romance.
